Living With Sciatica in Whitby: How Regular RMT Sessions Can Reduce Flare-Ups
By Josh Kennedy, RMT, May 28, 2026
Sciatica -- the radiating pain that travels from the lower back into the glute, down the back of the leg, and sometimes into the foot -- is one of the most disruptive pain experiences people deal with. It's also unpredictable: some days are manageable, others are debilitating. Regular RMT sessions don't eliminate sciatica, but for many clients they reduce the frequency and severity of flare-ups.
What's actually happening with sciatica
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The sciatic nerve gets irritated or compressed -- most commonly by a disc herniation, piriformis syndrome, or lumbar stenosis. The character of the pain (where it goes, what makes it worse) gives clues about the cause, but imaging is sometimes needed to confirm.
Piriformis syndrome -- where the piriformis muscle in the glute compresses the sciatic nerve -- is a common and treatable cause that responds well to massage. Disc-related sciatica is more complex and requires a different approach.
What RMT sessions can do for sciatica
- Release the piriformis and deep hip rotators, which frequently contribute to sciatic irritation even when they're not the primary cause.
- Address the lumbar erectors and quadratus lumborum, which can contribute to the loading that aggravates disc-related sciatica.
- Reduce the overall muscle tension and guarding patterns that develop around the pain, which themselves become pain generators over time.
Many clients report that regular sessions -- even when they can't eliminate flare-ups entirely -- make recovery from flare-ups faster and reduce the baseline level of discomfort between episodes.
The in-home advantage for sciatica
Car rides are rough on sciatica. Sitting in a specific position for 20-30 minutes can trigger a flare before you even get to the clinic. When your RMT comes to your home in Whitby, you go from the table to wherever is comfortable. No car ride required. For clients in a flare, this is a meaningful difference.
Important note
If your sciatica involves significant neurological symptoms (weakness in the leg, bladder or bowel changes, loss of sensation), see a physician before booking massage. These can indicate serious disc involvement that needs medical management first.
