Why In-Home Massage is Better for Chronic Pain Clients Than Driving to a Clinic
By Josh Kennedy, RMT, May 28, 2026
Most people think of in-home massage as a convenience. And it is. But for chronic pain clients specifically, the logistical difference between going to a clinic and having your therapist come to you is also a clinical difference -- one that affects how well the session actually works.
The pre-session problem
Getting to a clinic when you live with chronic pain involves effort. Driving, parking, waiting. If your back hurts when you sit, a 30-minute drive in traffic is 30 minutes of sustained irritation before the session even starts. Your nervous system arrives stressed. Your muscles arrive contracted. The therapist spends part of the session just getting you back to baseline.
When the therapist comes to your home, you can rest beforehand. You're already in your environment. You're calm. The session starts from a better place.
The post-session problem
This is the one that surprises people. After a good massage, your nervous system is parasympathetically dominant -- the opposite of fight-or-flight. Your blood pressure is lower. Your muscles are soft. Your pain perception is reduced. That's the state you want to hold as long as possible.
A 30-minute drive home reverses a significant portion of that. Navigating traffic, checking mirrors, managing pedals -- it's all sympathetic activation. By the time you get home, a chunk of the session's benefit has been undone.
When your RMT comes to you, the session ends in your own space. You can lie still, drink water, and let the work continue to settle for as long as you want. That's not a luxury -- it's better treatment delivery.
Who benefits most from in-home
- Chronic pain clients where the commute itself is painful.
- Post-surgical clients in recovery who have limited mobility.
- Fibromyalgia clients for whom unpredictable pain makes travel difficult.
- Clients who work long shifts and don't have the energy for added travel.
- Anyone for whom the post-session drive undoes the benefit.
Relaxation clients benefit from in-home too -- the absence of travel stress is real. But for chronic pain clients, it's not just convenient. It's better.
